Founded in 1996 by aerospace engineer Thomas Mertin, THM is a company that specializes in ultra high-grade, purpose-built components for competitive sports. THM had their first breakthrough in the cycling industry with the introduction of their THM-Carbones series cranks and fork. These components gained wide acclaim as some of the finest light-weight cycling components available; ridden and race proven by the Deutsch Telekom pro team to ensure that high-performance value was part of the incredibly light-weight package.
As a result of their company structure, THM is able to design, test, and produce components that are more technically advanced than many of their competitors. Made up of a small team of experts in their respective fields, almost all members of the THM team are involved in both engineering and production. With their expert team and facilities capable of the most advanced production methods, THM remains at the forefront of what is technically feasible with cycling components. Along with building their own production tooling, their custom testing equipment is also built in-house, allowing product testing beyond all industry safety norms.
This complete “in-house” process from design to production to testing was employed in the creation of the newest component in the THM lineup, the Ulna carbon handlebar. While THM has kept many of the details regarding the methods and materials used for this bar under wraps, one of the innovations that makes this bar unique is it's proprietary internal structure. This internal structure has allowed THM to make one of the lightest bars available while remaining as stiff as much heavier bars from the competition. At only 157 grams (42cm), these bars feature a compact profile (119mm drop and 77mm reach) and a 6 degree flare. As with all of their offerings, THM has not overlooked the small details that make a component both more elegant and better functioning. There are ports on the underside of the bars that allow internal Di2 wiring as well as grooves that provide channeling for brake and/or shift housing; keeping the bars looking clean and streamlined after being taped. Textured surfaces at the stem clamp area as well as the control clamping areas aid in holding the components firmly in place. The bar tops feature a generous flat section without being overly wide, providing a comfortable perch across a wide array of hand sizes. Dubbed as a “natural carbon” finish by THM, these black bars feature a stain finish that lies between a flat matte and a full gloss. Subtle white logos are found on either side of the clamping area. As always, the manufacturing and finish on this handlebar is absolutely top notch; the craftsmanship and extremely high-quality finish are obvious, however the aesthetics remain subtle and understated. One of the lightest road bars available from one of the leading names in ultra high-end and ultra light-weight components, the THM Ulna should not be overlooked when looking for a lightweight bar with outstanding performance characteristics.
Featuring a 31.8 clamp diameter, these bars are available in 40cm, 42cm, and 44cm. Rider weight limit is 243 lbs/110 Kg for all bar widths. These bars are not compatible with aero extensions, use of which will void the warranty. We recommend that these handlebars be installed by a professional mechanic, the technical manual is available here.
